Project Description

Kenya Geothermal & Green City Power Program

Energy America’s Africa headquarters in Nairobi is spearheading a multi-faceted program that combines geothermal development with innovative solar-powered “green city” grids. With an estimated potential of 250 MW across Rift Valley sites, this initiative positions Kenya as both a hub for baseload geothermal power and a testbed for sustainable urban energy systems.

Exploratory drilling for geothermal concessions is expected to begin in 2026, following licensing. If successful, the first 50 MW geothermal plant could be operational by 2029. In parallel, solar mini-grids are being planned for Kenya’s new technology-driven urban centers, such as Konza Technopolis, where rooftop solar, battery storage, and EV charging stations will be integrated into a smart, AI-driven energy management system.

EA Astrovolt Kenya is coordinating with the Ministry of Energy, Geothermal Development Company, and county governments to advance the program. Financing is anticipated through Kenya’s PPP framework and discussions with the U.S. DFC and other green infrastructure partners.

The program is designed to tap Kenya’s abundant geothermal resources while showcasing futuristic, low-carbon communities. Geothermal will provide reliable, 24/7 baseload energy, while solar-powered urban grids will ensure efficiency and resilience in Kenya’s emerging tech hubs.

Verification of EA’s progress is supported by its established headquarters in Nairobi, active EOIs submitted for geothermal concessions, and engagement with Kenyan authorities. Official confirmation will follow once concession agreements are finalized, but EA’s recognized presence and ongoing negotiations highlight the project’s strong trajectory.
