Project Description
Project Overview – Rwanda
EA is advancing a cutting-edge renewable energy project in Rwanda that combines utility-scale solar PV with a pilot green hydrogen facility. The initiative marks one of the first hydrogen projects in East Africa, supporting Rwanda’s ambition to pioneer innovative climate solutions.
Status & Timeline
The project is in the development pipeline, with an EOI submitted to Rwandan authorities under the national green energy initiative. Feasibility studies will take place in 2025–2026, with COD targeted by 2027 for the 120 MW solar farm. The 5 MWₑ electrolyzer pilot will be commissioned in parallel, producing green hydrogen from excess solar power.
Technical Details
-
Solar Plant: 120 MW using EA’s high-efficiency TOPCon modules (~25% efficiency) on a 250-hectare site.
-
Hydrogen Pilot: ~5 MWₑ electrolyzer, producing ~100 kg/day of green hydrogen for fertilizer production or fuel-cell transport in Kigali.
-
Innovation: Potential use of Centauri’s selenium-enhanced solar cells and BESS integration to balance solar-to-hydrogen conversion.
Partners
-
Rwanda Development Board and Ministry of Infrastructure – reviewing EA’s proposal
-
University of Rwanda – academic partner for hydrogen R&D
-
Financing: Discussions with climate-focused financiers, including potential support from the Green Climate Fund
Description
This project will add 120 MW of new generation to Rwanda’s grid – a significant expansion relative to current national capacity. At the same time, the pilot green hydrogen facility will showcase how renewable power can produce clean industrial fuels, opening pathways for fertilizer production and transport decarbonization. The initiative positions Rwanda as a regional leader in next-generation clean energy, while reinforcing EA’s reputation for innovative, resilient solutions.
Verification
EA’s participation is confirmed through a formal EOI submission to Rwandan authorities. While public announcements are pending, the project has been acknowledged in EA’s Africa portfolio summary and highlighted in U.S. Commercial Service briefing notes, underscoring its credibility.
