Project Description

Project Overview

EA is advancing an integrated clean energy initiative in Tanzania that combines utility-scale solar, geothermal power, and off-grid solar solutions. The program envisions a total capacity of 1,500 MW, including large solar farms, geothermal power plants, and decentralized off-grid systems for rural communities.

Status & Timeline

The initiative is currently in the development pipeline, with an official Expression of Interest (EOI) submitted to Tanzanian authorities. Government engagement is ongoing. An MoU and feasibility discussions are planned for 2025, with the first 100 MW solar farm targeted for COD by 2027 and phased geothermal drilling expected to begin by 2028.

Technical Details

The solar portfolio will utilize EA’s high-output 650 W PV modules, with potential battery storage integration for off-grid applications. The geothermal component will leverage Kenya-based expertise in geothermal drilling, coordinated through EA Astrovolt Kenya as the regional hub. For remote communities, containerized solar-plus-storage units will be deployed to provide reliable off-grid electrification.

Partners

EA is working closely with the Government of Tanzania (Ministry of Energy) under the country’s renewable procurement program. Discussions are also underway with TANESCO as the national utility, alongside potential international financiers, including the World Bank’s Scaling Solar program and other development partners.

Description

This holistic clean energy program is designed to boost Tanzania’s national generation capacity while simultaneously expanding rural electrification. Large-scale solar farms will harness the country’s abundant insolation, while geothermal projects in volcanic regions will provide reliable baseload power. Off-grid containerized systems will bring clean, affordable energy to communities beyond the grid, directly supporting Tanzania’s industrialization agenda and universal access goals.

Verification

An official EOI is already on record with the government, and Tanzania has acknowledged the proposal by entering active negotiations. Project details have been shared with the U.S. Commercial Service for facilitation under initiatives such as Power Africa, confirming U.S. government awareness. Further verification is expected with the signing of an implementation agreement in 2026.
